Discover the history of Curitiba.

Curitiba, the capital of the state of Paraná, has an interesting history marked by several significant moments. The region where the city is located was inhabited by indigenous people before the arrival of European colonizers. In 1654, the Portuguese explorer Gabriel de Lara founded the Village of Nossa Senhora da Luz dos Pinhais, which later became Curitiba.

Over the centuries, Curitiba developed as a strategic point for the trade of mate herb and cattle, attracting settlers and immigrants from various origins, such as Germans, Italians, Poles, and Ukrainians. This mix contributed to the construction of a rich cultural diversity in the city.
In the 19th century, Curitiba gained political and administrative importance, being elected the capital of the Province of Paraná in 1853. From there, the city underwent a process of modernization, with the construction of infrastructures such as railways, tram lines, and tree-lined avenues. A striking characteristic of the city is its urban planning, which began to be developed in the 1960s. Urban planner Jaime Lerner was fundamental in transforming the city into a worldwide reference in efficient public transportation, green areas, and sustainability. The integrated transportation system, with fast buses and subway lines, combined with extensive green areas and parks scattered throughout the city, are examples of how Curitiba stands out. Currently, Curitiba is internationally recognized for its quality of life, urban planning, and innovative projects. The city is home to several museums, theaters, cultural events, and offers excellent gastronomy, providing tourists with a unique experience.
